Let Me Tell You About Fictional Comics

Fictional Comics is home to my two current comic projects, The Optimist (a weekly comic strip) and Broken Lines (an ongoing illustrated novel project), as well as a place for other old and/or random stories, comic books, and miscellaneous scribbles.

Let Me Tell You About The Optimist

The Optimist is a weekly black and white gag strip—ad parodies, bad puns, occasionally-recurring characters, and immature giggling at words like “abreast.” I try to be funny about topics that I think are interesting, or God forbid, important. It is reproduced on newsprint in The Valley Advocate and also appears on the DigBoston website. The comic has been published off-and-on since 2007. While it is true that The Optimist is widely recognized as THE ONLY COMIC ON THE INTERNET, there have been literally thousands of claims to the contrary. As of press time they remain unconfirmed, but I will be sure to keep you abreast of the situation as it develops. Read it. Peruse the archive. Read reviews of it. Buy it.

Let Me Tell You About Broken Lines

I often call Broken Lines the awesome albatross around my neck. It’s one of my favorite projects ever, even though I go long stretches without working on it and have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will not finish it before the age of forty. It’s a weird fun mixture of prose, sequential comic art, and like, charts ‘n’ footnotes ‘n’ sidebars ‘n’ stuff. It is a hot, crowded mess of entertainment and is dense in every meaning of the word. I’ve been releasing it a chapter at a time for a few years now, as a way to assure friends and colleagues that I am in fact working on something cool and original and not writing homoautoerotic Knight Rider fanfic, which I have DEFINITELY NEVER DONE and most certainly NEVER CAVED TO GLEN A. LARSON’S BULLSHIT CEASE AND DESIST. Someday, when completed, Broken Lines will combine to form one big graphic novel, like a Japanese robot. Read it. Read reviews of it. Buy it.

Let Me Tell You About The Author

My name is Tom Pappalardo. I’ve been making comics for a couple of decades or so. Some of them are funny, some of them are mean, and a precious few of them are meaningful. Professionally, I’m a self-employed illustrator, graphic designer, and After Effects animator based out of Northampton, Massachusetts. I’m in a band. I’m on Twitter. You can email me if you’d like.
